Gerd In Children

An 11-year-old boy in Boston developed a Gastro esophageal reflux Disease (GERD). According to his mother, Cathy, it was the end of June in the year 2005 when his son developed a cough which usually happens during sleep, and even during daytime. It is only a short dry cough symptom. His pediatrician thought it was only allergy, however, when his son was tested, result showed that his son had no allergy. According to her, it was his son’s asthma that relates to GERD.

Studies show that GERD is likewise normal to infants and children like in adults, though this fact is often times being overlooked. The symptoms come in continual sickness, coughing, and other respiratory trouble.

Children are vulnerable to GERD because of their immature digestive system. Truth is majority of the infants grow out of GERD once they reach the age of one year old.

The medical specialists further stated that symptoms for children may come in difficulty in swallowing foods, or failure to grow. The doctors recommended that in situation like this it is best to lessen the amount of acid in the children’s stomach before it could lead to acid reflux, since this disease is not very curable in children.

However, the doctor suggested some approaches to avoid acid reflux on children; an example of these is burping the infant quite a few times during feeding, or letting the infant stay in an erect position for 30 minutes after nourishing.

Although, for a child ages three and up, doctors suggested to keep them off from sodas that includes caffeine like soft drinks, carbonated drinks, spicy foods like peppermint, acidic foods like citrus fruits, too much chocolate, and fried and fatty foods. Ideally, establishing a healthy eating habit diet can really decrease the acid reflux in children.
It is also suggested that children will eat smaller meals before sleeping, if possible, do not allow them to eat two to three hours before sleeping, also, elevate the head of their bed for at least 30 degrees.

Further treatments include the use of H2 blockers; this is available in any drugs store. Prevacid, proton plump inhibitors, can also be used in treating acid flux for children.

However, if these treatments fail to stop the symptoms, other treatment method needs to be done. It is very atypical, but doctors’ recommends surgery, this is so far the best treatment for relentless symptoms which do not anymore counter to other treatments.

The Esophageal reflux surgery for children is designated for children who have had unsuccessful medical treatments, and continuous surgery is essential as the child grows.

Now, if you get confused whether when is the time to consult a pediatrician regarding acid reflux. The answer is you observe, observe the amounts of vomiting of the child, if it already comes out in green or yellow or appears to be like blood or coffee grounds, there difficulty in breathing after vomiting, and there is pain in swallowing, immediately consult a pediatrician before the symptom gets aggravated.

So to prevent the occurrence of this disease, stay away from the habit of leaning forward after eating, or worse, sleeping after taking a large amount of food.

Take note, advanced acid reflux disease has a great possibility to end serious medical complications, and it may lead to hospitalization.

Be keen of the possible symptoms so will not overlook it. Take care of your kids.

Acid reflux is a condition that causes heartburn due to the acidic contents of the stomach flowing back into the esophagus, and even the throat and nose. Here are some foods to avoid in order to prevent it from occurring, or keep it under control.

Acid reflux, also known as heartburn, is a condition wherein acid-containing gastric juices come back into the esophagus from the stomach. The lower part of the esophagus contains a valve at the end, known as the lower esophageal sphincter, or LES for short, which opens in order to let the food we eat get into the stomach, and then shutting in order to keep the gastric juices and food within the stomach. When this valve relaxes too frequently or does not shut properly, it can result in the gastric juices getting into the esophagus, which is not equipped to deal with the acidic matter. When this occurs it leads to the telltale signs of heartburn, with a burning sensation in the area.

While most people may experience heartburn occasionally, if it continues for too long, despite making changes in the diet as well as treatment, it could mean acid reflux disease, also referred to as GERD. When the esophagus is exposed continuously to the acidic juices of the stomach, it can become irritated and even damaged, leading to erosive esophagitis, or inflammation of the esophagus.

What are the Symptoms of Acid Reflux?

Different people may experience the symptoms of acid reflux in different ways. One of the commonest symptoms is heartburn, of course, however, various people may experience other symptoms too, such as:

A burning sensation in the throat

Sourness in the mouth

A sensation of acidic contents rising from the stomach

A burning or pain felt in the chest

Breathing difficulty, even triggering off asthma, dental erosion, and hoarseness, since the acidic juices can get into airways of the lungs, mouth, and throat

Dysphagia, or difficulty or pain during swallowing

Inability getting to sleep due to heartburn

In case, you should experience any of the above symptoms, it may indicate the onset of acid reflux disease, which you need to get diagnosed by a doctor as soon as possible.

What are the Foods to Avoid to Control Acid Reflux?

The above symptoms can be painful as well as debilitating, which is the reason that most people suffering from them take medications to keep them under control. However, the condition can be improved by finding out about what foods to avoid, and making the required dietary changes thereby. Of course you will need to consult your doctor before making any drastic dietary changes, and also devise a plan that you know you can stick to over the long-term.

Some of the usual foods that are known to cause heartburn, which leads to acid reflux disease, are: dairy products such as milk, cheese, yogurt, milk shakes, and ice cream; spicy foods; garlic and onions; high-carb foods like bread, macaroni, and spaghetti; fried foods; chocolate; alcoholic beverages; caffeinated beverages; beef; mashed potatoes; spearmint and peppermint; and tomato-based foods.

However, keep in mind that each person’s food triggers may differ from another person’s. For example, while tomato-based foods may not trigger off acid reflux symptoms in one person, it may do so in somebody else. The best way to find out which foods do trigger off acid reflux symptoms is to maintain a food diary, jotting down the foods that do cause the symptoms.

Also, it is best to avoid eating large meals, and instead have smaller meals more number of times in a day. In addition, it is also recommended not to go to bed soon after a meal. A third tip that you can try to alleviate the symptoms is to elevate the head of your bed.

Note: There is a widespread misconception that acidic fruits like lime, lemon, oranges and the like trigger off acid reflux, and hence should be avoided. According to studies made it has been found that there is no truth in citrus fruits triggering off acid reflux. As a matter of fact, personally speaking, it is quite to the contrary. Whenever I have had heartburn, a glass of strong lime juice has actually helped to alleviate the symptoms quite promptly. However, of course, your doctor will be the best person to give you the right advice according to your individual symptoms and requirements.

What Others Are Saying:

Eliminate Reflux Forever There is no easier or safer way to deal with and eliminate reflux pain (gerd) than by eating well. This doesn’t mean cutting out all the things you love to taste.

Learn how you can decrease and prevent acid reflux disease from a former acid reflux sufferer and qualified nutritionist.

It is the simultaneity of two medical conditions that brings on acid reflux, or GERD – gastroesophageal reflux disease as it is called. The reverse flow of food and acid from the stomach to the esophagus is the first factor favoring acid reflux disease. Nonetheless, healthy people can experience reflux as well, in a case called "physiologic gastroesophageal reflux" and this does not always mean symptoms of acid reflux disease or modification of the organic tissues.

The next factor provoking gastroesophageal reflux disease is a malfunction of the LES, the lower esophageal sphincter. This circle of muscle acts as a unidirectional valve between the esophagus and the stomach. It measures 3-4 cm, meaning that it is two to three times thicker than the proximal esophagus. When GERD occurs, the stomach content finds its way back into the esophagus because the LES does not shut correctly. This is then called acid reflux disease, with accompanying symptoms of the disease which follow.

Heartburn is the burning sensation felt in the throat or the chest, when the contents of the stomach escape back to the esophagus lining. The usual sensation connected to acid reflux disease is persistent (twice or week or more frequently) heartburn. Occasional heartburn can happen also. This is not necessarily a sign of gastro-esophageal reflux disease, as minor reflux can also happen to individuals in good health.

Some sufferers express a sensation of food that blocks, choking or constriction of the throat. It is the steady flow back of stomach contents against the esophagus that has this effect, causing a swelling of the esophagus due to scar tissue from histological degradation. Other patients of acid reflux disease may also experience pains in their chest or nausea, coughing, burning pains in the chest, hoarseness in the morning, continual earache, sinusitis, changes in their voice, or problems in swallowing (notably lumpy foods).

Some patients can become affected by a condition known as Barrett’s esophagus, where cells occurring in the esophageal lining assume abnormal forms and colors. Particularly in adults aged over 60, this is a first step towards cancer of the esophagus. If left untreated for years, unrelated acid reflux increases the risk of esophageal cancer approx. eightfold. Actually, stomach acid reflux damage to esophageal cells is the major cause of the fatal esophageal cancer.

Other effects include stricture of the esophagus, ulcers, bleeding, and spasms. When acid from the stomach reaches the trachea as well as the upper esophagus, several severe conditions such as sinusitis, asthma, and pneumonia can follow. GERD that is not treated in a timely way can have serious consequences detrimental to health.

Surgery, medical therapy and holistic therapy are the three choices for dealing with acid reflux disease. The latter comprises diet and lifestyle modifications as well as taking of specific herbal supplements, among other alternative treatments. In fact, every treatment intervention for acid reflux begins by recommending lifestyle and dietary changes. Recent researches support the assumption that reducing high-fat meals, large meals and certain foods that trigger gastro-esophageal reflux disease (onions, tomatoes, oranges, alcohol, chocolate, peppermint etc.) may be helpful in the prevention of acid reflux disease.

PPIs and H2 blockers are among the medical options in cases of GERD. While one can use prescriptions of medicaments or acid blockers such as these, remember that the effects are often not permanent and that conventional medication can be accompanied by severe side effects. The use of surgery needs to be very carefully thought about, as certain hidden problems, such as constriction and muscular contraction disorders, can cause complications.

GERD, taking a holistic view, is a warning signal of a lack of internal equilibrium of consequence that must be properly dealt with. For this reason, alternative medicine such as herbal medicine, modifications in lifestyle, homeopathic remedies as components of a complete holistic program are the preferred choice for sufferers of acid reflux.

Anyone who suffers from the effects of GERD, knows how uncomfortable the condition can become. Most would prefer not to rely on over the counter acid reflux medications, instead preferring to find a gerd natural remedy. In this article, you will learn what acid reflux is, what some of the main symptoms are and gain some valuable diet for acid reflux disease tips.

Acid reflux is a condition wherein partially digested food containing the digestive acids secreted by the stomach comes back into the esophagus. Here are a few diet tips to alleviate the symptoms of acid reflux.

Acid reflux is a problem wherein the gastric juices, which contain acid, come back into the gullet or esophagus.

Some of the main symptoms of acid reflux are:

Regurgitation – Food brought back into the mouth

Heartburn – A burning sensation which rises from the lower chest or stomach and comes up into the throat.

Dysphagia – Swallowing is difficult or even painful.

Pain in the chest.

Asthma, dental erosion, and hoarseness, since the stomach juices get into the air passage, mouth, and throat.

Why Does Acid Reflux Occur?

This problem is experienced by some people regularly, in which case it is known as GERD, or Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease.

Once the food gets into the stomach, it is partially digested by enzymes and acids produced in the stomach. In normal conditions, this partially digested food is pushed into the small intestine by the stomach muscle. However, in people who suffer from acid reflux, the partially digested food from the stomach travels in the reverse direction, getting into the esophagus, which results in damage and inflammation.

Some of the factors that contribute to acid reflux are: obesity; alcohol; cigarettes; fatty foods, especially if they are deep fried; stomach emptying being delayed; and pregnancy.

The pressure inside the abdomen is increased due to pregnancy and obesity, which results in the contents of the stomach being pushed back into the esophagus.

In some people, the contents of the stomach are emptied very slowly. When the stomach is full of partially digested food containing acid, there is an increased tendency of it causing acid reflux, particularly when the person lies down.

Acid Reflux Diet Tips

Many people who suffer from acid reflux have a tendency of taking over-the-counter medications, such as antacids, to relieve their acid reflux symptoms. However, most of these people can alleviate their acid reflux symptoms just by following a proper diet.

If you suffer from acid reflux, here are some tips on what you should eat and what you need to avoid in order to follow an acid reflux diet:

Grains: Generally, foods made from grains like bread, crackers, cereals, and rice are pretty safe, since they neutralize the juices in the stomach.

Vegetables: Broccoli, carrots, peas, and green beans are recommended. If your symptoms are not very severe, you can eat garlic and onions. But, French fries, potato salad, mashed potatoes, and deep fried foods should be avoided when you follow an acid reflux diet.

Meats: As far as meat is concerned, it really depends on how the meat dishes are prepared. Fresh fish and chicken breast, without fat added, are regarded as safe. Eggs, scrambled or fried, tuna salad, and even fried fish can be eaten in moderation. However buffalo wings and chicken cooked in the nugget-style are best avoided.

Fruits: Papaya and pineapple are considered to be particularly beneficial, since both these fruits help in neutralizing the contents of the stomach. Apples and bananas are regarded as safe. Various berries, like cranberries, strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries are also fine, as long as they are eaten in moderate amounts. Citrus fruits are covered below.

Beverages: Mineral water is highly recommended. However, it is advisable to avoid carbonated beverages and alcohol.

Further Tips to Combat Acid Reflux

Instead of eating three large meals in a day, it is advisable to consume smaller meals more frequently. When you lower the amount of food, it results in exerting less work load on the stomach, which in turn results in the stomach secreting less acid for digestion.

High-fat foods, especially those from fast food outlets, should be avoided. High-fat foods have a tendency of remaining longer in the stomach, which causes the stomach to secrete excessive acid to digest them.

Most importantly, avoid overeating. Overeating any food will cause the stomach to secrete excessive acid.

An upright position should be maintained while eating as well as at least 45 minutes after a meal.

When lying down, it is advisable to elevate the head of the bed by 6-8 inches.

It is a misconception that beverages flow quickly through the stomach, without the acid secretion being affected. Many types of beverages, like pop, wine and beer do stimulate the secretion of acid in the stomach, with beer being the worst. The acid can be doubled in your stomach inside an hour of consuming beer.

Misconceptions of Acid Reflux Diet

Drinking Milk to Reduce Symptoms of Acid Reflux: Many people drink milk before going to sleep in the hope of easing the symptoms of acid reflux. However, this can be counterproductive if you have eaten a large meal. When you eat a heavy meal at dinner, it results in the secretion of excessive acid in the stomach.

Avoiding Citrus Fruits, Caffeine, and Spicy Food: It is an old misconception that citrus fruits that contain acid such as grapefruit, lemon, orange and so on exacerbate the acid reflux symptoms. And the same has been thought about caffeine and spicy food. However, recent research has proven that these beliefs are false.

How can a GERD diet help you to overcome the effects of acid reflux?

GERD or gastroesophageal reflux disease is sometimes referred to as acid reflux. The symptoms that a person suffers from with this disease can be very wide ranging as well as being extremely annoying.

But if a person suffering from this disease wishes to alleviate these symptoms then they will need to make changes to their lifestyle and also start using a GERD diet.

Normally making changes to your lifestyle may seem a little daunting but certainly by alleviating some of the stresses and strains that you feel during the course of a day will help to improve your situation immensely. Also you need to start looking at the kind of foods you are eating and making changes to your diet which can then prevent the acid reflux from becoming worse.

However when it comes to making changes to your diet in order to alleviate the symptoms of this disease it does not mean that you have to give up those that you really enjoy. Instead what you need to do is find out about those foods which are causing the symptoms and then just start to reduce the amount of them that you consume. You do not need to eliminate them entirely from your diet as just by reducing the amount that you eat will go a long way to helping you to deal with acid reflux.

Also by creating a GERD diet, you are helping to strengthen the muscles that are to be found at the bottom of your throat and which will in turn help to prevent the acid reflux occurring. The muscles at the bottom of your throat allow food that you have eaten to gain entry into your stomach. They open as the food passes down your throat and will close once all food has entered the stomach. When you have acid reflux, these muscles have become too wide and so they are unable to close properly once the food has passed through.

When it comes to you designing a GERD diet in order to help alleviate the symptoms of this particular disease and to help strengthen up the muscles at the base of your throat you should first consider eliminating such foods as chocolate, fried foods, caffeinated drinks, whole milk and those foods and drinks which contain large amounts of citrus in them. Instead you should increase the amount of fat free milk as well as fish both of which can help to alleviate acid reflux.

Ricky Lim highly recommend herbal acid reflux treatment for your acid reflux problems especially for infants and young children. Visit his site at http://www.herbalacidreflux.com for more acid reflux information.

Never Go Hungry Again

Now you can eat your way to good health, forever!
