Acid reflux, also known as heartburn, is a condition wherein acid-containing gastric juices come back into the esophagus from the stomach. The lower part of the esophagus contains a valve at the end, known as the lower esophageal sphincter, or LES for short, which opens in order to let  the food we eat  get into the stomach, and then shutting in order to keep the gastric juices and food within the stomach. When this valve relaxes too frequently or does not shut properly, it can result in the gastric juices getting into the esophagus, which is not equipped to deal with the acidic matter. When this occurs it leads to the telltale signs of heartburn, with a burning sensation in the area.

While most people may experience heartburn occasionally, if it continues for too long, despite making changes in the diet as well as treatment, it could mean acid reflux disease, also referred to as GERD. When the esophagus is exposed continuously to the acidic juices of the stomach, it can become irritated and even damaged, leading to erosive esophagitis, or inflammation of the esophagus.

What are the Symptoms of Acid Reflux?

Different people may experience the symptoms of acid reflux in different ways. One of the commonest symptoms is heartburn, of course, however, various people may experience other symptoms too, such as:

  • A burning sensation in the throat
  • Sourness in the mouth
  • A sensation of acidic contents rising from the stomach
  • A burning or pain felt in the chest

  • Dysphagia, or difficulty or pain during swallowing
  • Inability getting to sleep due to heartburn

What are the Foods to Avoid to Control Acid Reflux?

The above symptoms can be painful as well as debilitating, which is the reason that most people suffering from them take medications to keep them under control. However, the condition can be improved by finding out about what foods to avoid, and making the required dietary changes thereby. Of course you will need to consult your doctor before making any drastic dietary changes, and also devise a plan that you know you can stick to over the long-term.

However, keep in mind that each person’s food triggers may differ from another person’s. For example, while tomato-based foods may not trigger off acid reflux symptoms in one person, it may do so in somebody else. The best way to find out which foods do trigger off acid reflux symptoms is to maintain a food diary, jotting down the foods that do cause the symptoms.

Also, it is best to avoid eating large meals, and instead have smaller meals more number of times in a day. In addition, it is also recommended not to go to bed soon after a meal. A third tip that you can try to alleviate the symptoms is to elevate the head of your bed.

Note: There is a widespread misconception that acidic fruits like lime, lemon, oranges and the like trigger off acid reflux, and hence should be avoided. According to studies made it has been found that there is no truth in citrus fruits triggering off acid reflux. As a matter of fact, personally speaking, it is quite to the contrary. Whenever I have had heartburn, a glass of strong lime juice has actually helped to alleviate the symptoms quite promptly. However, of course, your doctor will be the best person to give you the right advice according to your individual symptoms and requirements.

The usual sensation connected to acid reflux disease is persistent (twice or week or more frequently) heartburn. Occasional heartburn can happen also. This is not necessarily a sign of gastro-esophageal reflux disease, as minor reflux can also happen to individuals in good health.

Some sufferers express a sensation of food that blocks, choking or constriction of the throat. It is the steady flow back of stomach contents against the esophagus that has this effect, causing a swelling of the esophagus due to scar tissue from histological degradation. Other patients of acid reflux disease may also experience pains in their chest or nausea, coughing, burning pains in the chest, hoarseness in the morning, continual earache, sinusitis, changes in their voice, or problems in swallowing (notably lumpy foods).

Some patients can become affected by a condition known as Barrett’s esophagus, where cells occurring in the esophageal lining assume abnormal forms and colors. Particularly in adults aged over 60, this is a first step towards cancer of the esophagus. If left untreated for years, unrelated acid reflux increases the risk of esophageal cancer approx. eightfold. Actually, stomach acid reflux damage to esophageal cells is the major cause of the fatal esophageal cancer.

Other effects include stricture of the esophagus, ulcers, bleeding, and spasms. When acid from the stomach reaches the trachea as well as the upper esophagus, several severe conditions such as sinusitis, asthma, and pneumonia can follow. GERD that is not treated in a timely way can have serious consequences detrimental to health.

The pressure inside the abdomen is increased due to pregnancy and obesity, which results in the contents of the stomach being pushed back into the esophagus.

In some people, the contents of the stomach are emptied very slowly. When the stomach is full of partially digested food containing acid, there is an increased tendency of it causing acid reflux, particularly when the person lies down.

Acid Reflux Diet Tips

Many people who suffer from acid reflux have a tendency of taking over-the-counter medications, such as antacids, to relieve their acid reflux symptoms. However, most of these people can alleviate their acid reflux symptoms just by following a proper diet.

If you suffer from acid reflux, here are some tips on what you should eat and what you need to avoid in order to follow an acid reflux diet:

Grains: Generally, foods made from grains like bread, crackers, cereals, and rice are pretty safe, since they neutralize the juices in the stomach.

Vegetables: Broccoli, carrots, peas, and green beans are recommended. If your symptoms are not very severe, you can eat garlic and onions. But, French fries, potato salad, mashed potatoes, and deep fried foods should be avoided when you follow an acid reflux diet.

Meats: As far as meat is concerned, it really depends on how the meat dishes are prepared. Fresh fish and chicken breast, without fat added, are regarded as safe. Eggs, scrambled or fried, tuna salad, and even fried fish can be eaten in moderation. However buffalo wings and chicken cooked in the nugget-style are best avoided.

Fruits: Papaya and pineapple are considered to be particularly beneficial, since both these fruits help in neutralizing the contents of the stomach. Apples and bananas are regarded as safe.   • Instead of eating three large meals in a day, it is advisable to consume smaller meals more frequently. When you lower the amount of food, it results in exerting less work load on the stomach, which in turn results in the stomach secreting less acid for digestion.
  • High-fat foods, especially those from fast food outlets, should be avoided. High-fat foods have a tendency of remaining longer in the stomach, which causes the stomach to secrete excessive acid to digest them.
  • Most importantly, avoid overeating. Overeating any food will cause the stomach to secrete excessive acid.
  • An upright position should be maintained while eating as well as at least 45 minutes after a meal.
  • When lying down, it is advisable to elevate the head of the bed by 6-8 inches.
  • It is a misconception that beverages flow quickly through the stomach, without the acid secretion being affected. Many types of beverages, like pop, wine and beer do stimulate the secretion of acid in the stomach, with beer being the worst. The acid can be doubled in your stomach inside an hour of consuming beer.
